Released 25th July 2016

This album contains some of his strongest songs to date.

IRR092: OUTSIDER - JOHN FORRESTER (2014)

Released on 27th October 2014

Outsider is an album of rolling diversity but is deftly anchored by Forrester’s warm, openhearted vocals, his confident yet un-showy musicianship and his raggle-taggle cast of ace supporting players. It’s a contemporary take on folk and roots, but is steeped in the great traditions; it’s a subjective and meditative gaze at the mid-life psyche, yet its themes are universal; and it’s a testament to patience, exploration and determination, but still has time for humour and humanity in its hasty 46 minute running time.

IRR091: US & THEM - ROBB JOHNSON (2014)

Released on 28th July 2014

A new acoustic album of contemporary folk songs firmly engaged with the realities of not-so-Merrie Olde Condemned Englande... songs about getting up in the morning and getting on with it, shopping centres and food banks, yuppified pubs and barefoot kids, the centenary of the outbreak of the disaster that was supposed to be the war to end all wars, the disaster that is supposed to be the Minister for Education Michael Gove, drunks and railway stations, Boris Johnson and UKIP, Terry French and the Miners’ Strike, and a celebration of the life of Bob Crow... a tender, bleak, angry, humane, bitter, witty and undefeated album, recorded as live as possible to make sure it sounds like it means it.

IRR088 and IRR089: GENTLE MEN - ROBB JOHNSON AND OTHERS (2013)

Robb's highly acclaimed "family history of the First World War and its consequences" is available both in a double CD digipack version (IRR088) and as part of a 120-page book version (IRR089). Robb has revisited and revised the song suite, originally commissioned in 1997 for the Passendale Peace Concert, to take into account the experience both of subsequent performances and of recent historical events.

This new re-recording now includes several new songs, and is performed by a new cast of superb singers and musicians. Roy Bailey reprises his role as Robb's grandfathers, while Barb Jungr sings the female voices, and accompaniment is provided by Robb, Jude Abbott, Jenny Carr and John Forrester. IRR087V: WEST PIER SERENADE - ROBB JOHNSON (2013)

Robb says: "This is a sort of relatively unpolitical 'best of',  featuring the superb musicianship of Saskia Tomkins. Originally planned to accompany a collection of my dad’s poetry, the songs were chosen partly by my dad, and partly by me as being appropriate to the album. My dad later decided he didn’t want to make his poems public, but as that was after we had recorded the album, I decided to continue with the process, and as I was so happy with the recordings, particularly with again having Saskia gracing my songs with her magic, I decided I’d like to reproduce these recordings on vinyl. The LP was first made available for Record Store day on 20th April 2013, and also includes a CD version. There is no CD-on-its-own release, but I will be selling CD versions at gigs or through mail order to help pay for the project. To buy the CD by mail order, please send a cheque for £15 (£12 if you are really skint) made out to Robb Johnson to PO Box 5143, Hove BN52 9FT. If you want anything written on the CD, just say what! And don't forget to include your name and address."

The songs also feature a diverse range of inspirations & characters, from 60s folkie Al Stewart to the Beat Generation's George Whitman, from the radical writer George Tressell and WWI pacifist Alice Wheeldon to a man with a rotweiler on Wigan Wallgate Station, and Brentford striker Clayton Donaldson. The album can only enhance Robb's reputation as one of the finest UK contemporary songwriters, & with the guest musicians enhancing the performance of the songs, this could well be one of Robb's finest albums to date.

IRR085: BLUESMAN - JOHN B. SPENCER (2013)

Review from an Amazon user, A. Euwijk:

"This album has been long in the making, but finally it's here. John B. Spencer is, as they say, an acquired taste, some people find his voice too harsh or hoarse or something. So if you like a voice to be like that of Engelbert Humperdink's in his prime, don't bother. Don't be put of by the title though, it isn't a blues album, it's far more eclectic, to use another cliché. Good songs, words and melodies, some funny, some thought provoking, some slow, some fast. About Levon Helm and The Band, about the Everly Brothers, about an event that Gus van Sant needed a whole movie for, maybe one about John Lennon? No drums, lots of rhythm. Excellent players like Graeme Taylor and Bernard O'Neil, who finished the album as John B. died before he could. Bonus track with Martin Simpson and Danny Thompson, the latter singing! If you're still reading instead of ordering..."

IRR084: THOUGHTS IN THE DARK - TRACY CURTIS (2013)

The long-awaited third album from songwriter Tracey Curtis sees her continuing to develop both as a writer and performer, effortlessly combining the personal and the political, with her particular characteristics of anger and warmth, honesty and compassion. This album also sees her duetting with Chumbawamba's Boff on the co-written "The Cancer Song". A great album by a great contemporary songwriter.

IRR083: HAPPILY EVER AFTER - ROBB JOHNSON AND THE IRREGULARS (2012)
IRRV083V - Vinyl version

"Happily Ever After" is a ten-song conclusion to 2011's "Once Upon a Time". Performed by the Irregulars - Robb and Tim on guitar, and Charlie and John on drums & bass respectively - it was recorded as live as possible by Ali at Transmission Studios. Seven of the ten songs were recorded at the same time as "Once Upon a Time", and three more were recorded in November, including "When Tottenham Burned" which was named "Song of the Year" in 2011 by FATEA magazine.

IRR082: ONCE UPON A TIME - ROBB JOHNSON AND THE IRREGULARS (2011)
IRRV082V - Vinyl version

The Irregulars now has a twin-guitar, bass and drums line-up, with Tim Sanpher on guitar along with Robb Johnson, and bass and drums provided by the Forrester and Waygood partnership. Roger Watson remains the melodeon player, even though since suffering a stroke in 2010 he is no longer able to play. Without Roger, there is not even the fig-leaf of melodeon-flavoured fFolke Respectability, so this album was released not only on CD but also as a download (from Proper Distribution) and on limited-edition vinyl.

"Once Upon a Time" got some pretty ecsatic reviews: "a lean, muscled roots/punk hybrid that echoes The Clash and Oysterband in places ... literate, uplifting, sad and beautiful - and full of real tunes to which you can actually sing along" said R2.

IRR080: SOME RECENT PROTEST SONGS - ROBB JOHNSON (2011)

A solo acoustic album from Robb Johnson, incorporating a baker's dozen of biting songs, including "Goodnight Jerusalem", "The North West Frontier" and "The Man Who Poked Camilla". Reviews of the album include:

“impressive … thoughtful and personal stories of squandered hopes, and laments for a divided Britain” (The Guardian)

“a perfect record for the times” (R2)

“funny, moving and inspiring” (The Morning Star)

“Robb’s typically literate, quirkily individual songs genuinely entertain” (Properganda)

IRR079: MORE TO BE REVEALED - MIKE REINSTEIN (2011)

From Amazon.co.uk reviews:
"Mike Reinstein's songs take an oblique view of everyday life, often picking up on obscure news stories or little known facts such as 'When Hitler drank tea he held his pinkie out' - a satirical look at the fastidiousness of dictators in history. Another song in a reggae style tells the story of British Aerospace's bizarre ecological standpoint when they said they were making bullets from tungsten not lead! This is essentially an acoustic set of contemporary folk. The addition in some tracks of keyboards and vocals adds to the album never taking away from the story telling nature of Mike Reinstein's songs."

IRR078: CAUSES AND CURES - AL BAKER AND THE DOLE QUEUE (2011)

This album from "Troubacore" pioneer Al Baker offers ten tracks that bring a fresh and sobering look at the issues of the day, yet still inspire passion enough to "make you want to throw a brick through something". Every track is packed with Al's trademark intelligent wit, striking lyrical prowess and a powerhouse of a thirteen-member ad hoc backing band.

IRR077: MAN WALKS INTO A PUB - ROBB JOHNSON (2010)

This album sees Robb revisiting his folk club songwriting roots. The majority of the 14 tracks on the album were written for the monthly Hove Folk Club that he's been running since September 2008. Robb set out to write a new song for each folk club night, and rediscovered just how enjoyable playing an acoustic guitar is - that's why the album includes two instrumentals, as well as Johnson’s trademark capacity to write intelligently about issues as diverse as love, kids, the war in Afghanistan, the condition of Albion, saving the world, pubs and meeting foxes on the way back from them after closing time. There’s also a cover of a traditional song, collected from the singing of Michael Jones and Joe Strummer, “Stay Free”.

IRR076: THE GHOST OF LOVE - ROBB JOHNSON AND THE IRREGULARS (2009)

Mary says: "Jesus Christ, I'm pregnant!"

A bleakly humorous, ironic commentary on the festive season, its myths, rituals and realities. Twelve songs that tell the story of Mary, an unmarried mother of God (possibly) from Feltham (definitely), and her relationship with Gary, carpenter and Brentford fan, and their two children, Jay and Jimmy, through the various Christmases they share as their children grow up from 1991 to 2009.

The set comes with a 24 page booklet with pretty comprehensive notes, and some great photos.

IRR070: WE CAN MAKE THE WORLD STOP - ALUN PARRY (2009)

From Amazon.co.uk reviews:
"Radical singer songwriter Alun Parry hails from Liverpool. He joins a long line of eminent folk singers and songwriters who have emerged from a city that has witnessed bitter political and social struggles and persistent fights against injustice... It would be wrong to portray this album as political polemic. Alun Parry produces songs underpinned by intelligent poetical lyrics combined with tunes and melodies that easily attract and hold the listener. He intersperses the CD with songs of love, passion and family that reflect the warm character and flamboyant characters of Merseyside's rich - and sometimes tarnished - heritage."

IRR069: DEVIL ON THE WIND - THE MEN THEY COULDN'T HANG (2009)

IRR068: LOVE AND DEATH AND POLITICS - ROBB JOHNSON AND THE IRREGULARS (2008)

From Amazon.co.uk reviews:
"What a fantastic album from one of the best singer-songwriters this country has ever produced. Always one to tweak at both the personal and political heartstrings, with this latest album, Robb Johnson has delivered everything we have come to expect from him, and more! By developing a rocking four piece band, with John Forrester on bass, Roger Watson on squeezebox and Charlie Waygood on drums, Robb Johnson has found a whole new platform for his unique blend of socially conscious folk-rock balladeering. The result is impressive; superb production, excellent music, mind-blowing lyrics and messages that will make you stop and reconsider your place this crazy world."

IRR067: THE COMMONS - DAVID ROVICS (2007)

"The Commons" is the first UK release for US songwriter David Rovics. David has had several albums out on US labels, and is already a favourite of broadcaster Andy Kershaw. This album, a live recording that's a mix of old favourites and new, unrecorded songs, is the first of his albums to be available in shops in the UK. David is a singer, songwriter and activist very much in the tradition of Woody Guthrie and Phil Ochs. On this album, he's accompanied by singer Allie Rosenblatt and demon banjo player Eric Royer, and this collection of 17 live recordings is a perfect introduction to his work. David's songs are witty, passionate, angry and tender, and provide a perfect alternative voice to the lunacies and lies promoted by the mainstream political media.

IRR066: ALL THAT WAY FOR THIS - ROBB JOHNSON AND THE IRREGULARS (2007)

From Amazon.co.uk reviews:
"Robb Johnson is quite simply the finest songwriter in the English language. I know of no one else who can combine keen observation of the everyday dreariness of working-class life, with rage against the hidden and not-so-hidden injuries of capitalism, with a poetic glimpse of a post-capitalist world of justice and solidarity, with the simple joy of living. If this isn't Robb's finest work yet, it's awfully close to it. I feel like a better person just for listening to it over and over the last few weeks. You will too."

IRR065: PICTURE POSTCARDS - TRACEY CURTIS (2006)

Building on the strengths of her first CD with intelligent, melodic folk-poppy songs that manage to personalise political issues with wit, passion and compassion, delivered with a beautiful vocal style, "Picture Postcards" shows Tracey's increased assurance and authority both as a performer and as a recording artist, without losing any of her characteristic charm and personality. It can only enhance her growing reputation as one of the UK's leading new singer-songwriters.

IRR062: ELVIS LIVES HERE - SWILL AND THE SWAGGERBAND (2006)

IRR060: MR JEAYS - PHIL JEAYS (2006)

Philip Jeays is the leading exponent of English chanson. Full stop. He writes the sort of highly literate songs that make most other songwriters feel they need to go away and practise a lot more.

IRR059: METRO - ROBB JOHNSON (2005)

The album features 15 songs and one spoken word piece. Robb is accompanied by the brilliant piano playing of Russel Churney. It's very much an English Chanson album (Jacques Brel meets Bertolt Brecht down at the Old Bull and Bush), with songs about London, Paris, New York, men, bars, death, loss, love and Berkhamstead.

CG59: CAROL GRIMES - MOTHER (2005)

This is an extraordinary album, beautifully arranged and performed, that defies genres and categories, effortlessly employing a diversity of musical elements - jazz, folk-blues, English chanson - to accompany Carol’s perfect interpretations of songs by Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Sandy Denny, John Lennon, Randy Newman, Fran Landesman, Shane McGowan, Ron Sexsmith, Joni Mitchell. The album also includes two new songs jointly written by Carol & album producer Ian Shaw.

IRR058: MIRANDA SYKES BAND (2005)

The MSB album follows on the success of her highly acclaimed solo album "Don't Look Down", released last year on Irregular. This time, she has assembled a stellar group of musicians to provide the setting for her immaculate vocal talents.

IRR057: A BEGINNER'S GUIDE - ROBB JOHNSON (2005)

18 tracks, voice and guitar, recorded live in the studio, a collection of new versions of current live favourites, rarities and six new songs.

Robb says: “Most of the gigs I do are just me and the acoustic guitar. Afterwards people often ask 'Which CD sounds most like what you did tonight?' It's this one.”

IRR056: FAST LANE ROOGALATOR - FAST LANE ROOGALATOR (2004)

An album of seriously fine songs by the late, great John B Spencer, recorded by a seriously fine rootsy rock band fronted by his sons Tom and Syd Spencer. Featuring contributions from top musos Bobby Valentino on violin, Jamie Matthews on harmonica and Graeme Taylor on various guitars, this is indeed a quality CD.

IRR055: ORDINARY HEROES - GEORGE PAPAVGERIS (2004)

The first album for Irregular by UNLaBELLED founding member George Papavgeris is a marvellous collection of songs that shows just why Roy Bailey, Johnny Collins, Vin Garbutt, Andy Irvine, to name but a few, and anybody who can more or less carry a tune in a bucket on the home counties folk scene, is singing a George Papavgeris song these days.

IRR054: TONY BLAIR: MY PART IN HIS DOWNFALL - ROBB JOHNSON (2004)

This is a double album and contains 29 songs, written since 1997 in response to the Blair regime and all its attendant farces and farragoes, presenting a dissenting view of cool Britannia, the Jubilee, and more wars than any other Prime Minister has presided over.

There's one CD of 18 acoustic tracks, and one CD of 11 electric tracks. They range in tone from angry to humorous, and deal with subjects as diverse as the death of Princess Di, the changes to the Licensing Laws, September 11th, the war against Iraq and the "state visit" of Dubya. There's a new version of the National Anthem, and a guest appearance from Leon Rosselson, on the song co-written about decommissioning Trident.

IRR053: ON THE BOULEVARD DES HOMMES - MONIQUE (2004)

Monique has chosen 12 songs, sung in French and English, written by men that explore the ideas of masculinity, using classic French and contemporary chanson, and with elements of jazz and world music. There are songs by Aznavour, Gainsbourg, Trenet and Nougaro, plus "Comme D'Habitude", the French chanson that provided the melody for "My Way", two songs from Corsica, as well as two original songs, "African Sun", a noirish tale of deceit and betrayal, and the title track, specially written for the album by contemporary English chansonnier, Robb Johnson.

IRR052: DON'T LOOK DOWN - MIRANDA SYKES (2004)

On "Don’t Look Down" Miranda has chosen a fine selection of material representing the best of the ongoing folk tradition. Miranda’s performance is augmented by tasteful contributions from producer John Harris, and Imogen O’Rourke, Richard Garbett and Olly Knight. However this is a very assured debut album that showcases Miranda’s beautiful voice & musicianship. It acknowledges her Lincolnshire roots and her family tradition of involvement in folk music, but it also reflects her position as a young artiste with a growing national reputation.

IRR051: DARKNESS AND DISGRACE - DES DE MOOR and RUSSELL CHURNEY (2004)

Des De Moor’s recording of his much-acclaimed musical cabaret show “Darkness & Disgrace”, a rediscovering of the songs of David Bowie, performed by Des with Russell Churney on piano and guest vocals from the show’s director Barb Jungr. The show was a real delight, witty, affectionate and intelligent, and was praised by critics, Bowie’s fanclub, and by David Bowie himself.

IRR050: CIRCLE OF LIGHT - MAGGIE HOLLAND (2004)

The fifth solo album from Maggie, with her usual appreciation of a good song, whether trad, self-written, American, English or whatever. This is a far cry from the current crop of wimpy, “sensitive” singer-songwriters.

Simple arrangements allow the words to take centre stage, a hallmark of Maggie’s performance, and themes of time, loss and that old English radical tradition recur throughout the album.

Maggie’s multi-tracked vocals (and hasn’t her Hampshire accent become stronger during her years of residence in Scotland?) accompanied by picked guitar, delicately frailed banjo and acoustic bass are beautifully accented by the contributions of Malcolm Ross (slide guitar and lap-steel, ex-Josef K, Fire Engines, Orange Juice etc.) and Wendy Weatherby (cello, much in demand musician and solo artist, Lester Simpson, Carol Laula, The Pearlfishers etc.). Anyone familiar with Maggie’s history will not need to be told that the musicianship is first class.

IRR049: SCARLET STORIES - CAROLINE NIN (2004) [deleted]

Caroline Nin’s electric performance of cabaret and chanson classics recorded live at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival is a brilliant, dark, seductive collection of the very best songs associated with the cabaret tradition. The album includes a venomous version of Brecht’s “Pirate Jenny”, a bravura version of “Mein Herr” and a powerful interpretation of Brel’s “Amsterdam”, and an original song by Marc Almond specially written for Caroline, “The One and Only You”.

IRR048: CLOCKWORK MUSIC - ROBB JOHNSON (2003)

Robb Johnson’s most recent album, recorded with the fabulous RJ3 musicians, Miranda Sykes on double bass & Saskia Tomkins on violin, viola and cello.
